THE SEARCH FOR THE PERFECT MOTORHOME

Consider all options – try several?

Buying a new campervan or motorhome, is for many people, the biggest ever expense after their house or car purchase - making the correct choice is essential.

With so many ranges, models and layouts to choose from, it is difficult to know which will be the best for you and your adventures until you’ve tried it.

The most sensible way to find out is to ‘try before you buy’.

Advice on hiring your first motorhome

Don’t travel far on your first trip

Starting local can be a very sensible choice as trying to remember how everything works when you're tired or in the dark can be stressful and getting help with water or heating systems out of hours near impossible. Consider finding somewhere close to home so you can arrive in daylight, get your motorhome up and running and you can then relax in luxury for the evening.

Know the size of your vehicle

Driving a large vehicle can be intimidating but knowing the height and width of the motorhome you’ve hired will ensure you don’t get in trouble at any barriers. Your hire vehicle may also have a motorhome specific SAT NAV (depending on model/specification), which allows you to enter the dimensions and will direct you on appropriate roads only.

Ensure you have the correct licence

When hiring a motorhome, you must be aware that if you passed your driving test on or after 1st January 1997, your licence will only entitle you to drive a motorhome with a maximum weight of up to 3,500kg. This generally only means you cannot drive the largest of motorhomes, but you must also be aware the limit includes what you travel with. Your hire company will advise you on this, but don’t be afraid to ask!

Hire the layout you plan to purchase

Make the most out of experience, if you fancy an electric drop down bed model, hire the exact version or one similar. This will give you a real world example and you will know for sure that layout suits your needs. It might just become clear that in such a space single beds might an obvious alternative if one partner is being woken up throughout the night, or a rear lounge is a possibility as the over cab bed was more than adequate.

Know what’s included in your hire

Whichever Roller Team you hire, it’s important to find out how much deposit will be have to be paid, the terms and conditions of the insurance policy and whether any essential equipment, such as gas bottles, cooking equipment or bedding are included. Also, consider if they allow dogs if you have one and whether they offer contact details in case if you have any questions or problems while you are on holiday.

      Choose the perfect location

Starting out, a larger campsite may be the best choice as these will have the most facilities but in a motorhome you everything you need, so smaller sites will be suitable too. There is loads of choice and you might want to sign up to the Camping and Caravanning Club or Caravan and Motorhome Club to get access to their campsites across the UK. What we wouldn’t recommend for a first trip is wild camping, where you park up ‘off grid’. This is certainly possible in all Auto-Trails but getting to know how a motorhome works takes time and it’s best to learn in reassuring surroundings.

      TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

      Our final piece of advice

      Have fun and make memories!

A holiday in a motorhome is like no other – whether it’s a family beach adventure or a couple touring the highlands, the sense of freedom and bonding, travelling and living together in a different location each day will be an experience you will never forget.
