Pegaso 740 review | Caravan Guard

Caravan Guard

A to B-rit

Topping off the Roller Team range for 2018 is a very interesting beast. It’s an A-class, the sole such model in the line-up, and it has an eye-catchingly low price.

Just as notable are the changes made for this, the Pegaso’s second season in the UK. It may be built in Italy, but as of now all Pegaso 740 motorhomes are fully “handed” for us – with the habitation door on our nearside and a cab door on the driver’s side. Some of the interior layout switches to suit, too, although the popular island bed arrangement at the back is retained.

A-class’s sit at the pinnacle of motorhomes. Built from the chassis up, the bodywork means interior space is optimised, with all-round insulation and features like drop-down overcab beds. These really are the “grand tourers” of the motorhome world.

Fiat’s highly capable Ducato – in chassis cowl format – provides the running gear for the Pegaso. Plenty of folk will recognise the Ducato dashboard, enhanced here by a neat moulded unit housing the reversing monitor to the driver’s right hand, which will also give you a motorhome insurance discount. TomTom satellite navigation is also standard.

Those captain’s style cab seats, too, should be ideal for long distance journeys and enjoying the superior views out you get from an A-class, thanks largely to that panoramic windscreen. Park up and they’re easily swivelled to complete a lounge that also comprises an L-shaped settee (adaptable to a forward-facing double seat when you want to carry two extra passengers), plus a nearside inward-facing settee. It’s the whitest of leather-style upholstery here, but Roller Teams insists it’s particularly easy to clean when the almost inevitable mud etc gets in.

Pegaso 740

Indeed, much of the interior is in white, toned down by the dark finish to the furniture.

The layout is such, though, that’s it’s fairly easy to walk from the cab area all the way to the bedroom at the back. Height adjustment for the island bed means you can use the space below for all manner of storage, right up to the full garage if you want to carry your bikes and more onboard.

The bed is flanked by his and hers wardrobes and handy ledges, plus there are a couple of lockers set high overhead. There are also the requisite facilities for watching TV from this bed (there’s similar in the lounge, too).

At the foot of the bed, washroom facilities extend across the full width of the vehicle. A countertop basin takes the central location, with a shower cubicle (noticeably on the wheel arch) on the nearside and swivel-bowl toilet offside. Space is a tad cramped but there’s privacy when you want it thanks to three sliding doors.

Moving forward, the L-shape for the kitchen unit means storage and worktop space is optimised. In that respect, the combined oven and grill makes sense, while hob cooking is confined to three gas rings. The circular sink adjacent compromises worktop space, but there’s a good array of storage – including two spice racks and a slide-out locker with racking ideal for tins and smaller bottles. There’s no obvious cutlery storage spot, however. Thetford’s narrow-bodied 141-litre fridge with cooling drawer is a bonus, surely sufficing for all your chilling needs.

Like all Roller Teams, the Pegaso has state-of-the-art bodywork construction, with external and internal walls in GRP, Styrofoam insulation and plastic where some makers are still using wood. The 10-year water ingress warranty is reassuring, as is five-year cover for the whole of the habitation side.

Upgrade items as standard, ranging from Truma’s more powerful Combi 6 heating and hot water system to 120Watt solar panel to alloy wheels and a bike rack for four, and more, are sufficient to the extent that there’s no long lists of optional extras to worry your wallet. With that in mind, the 340kg payload should just about suffice. If you want more, consider the 3,650kg chassis upgrade, as long as your driving licence allows. It’s no extra cost.

Verdict: Bargain A-class with big Brit appeal

Plus: All set for UK use, comprehensively equipped for the price

Minus: No upholstery alternatives

In-a-nutshell: A-star for the UK
