Invading the bargain van conversions sector

Roller Team might be a popular import here in the UK, but so far its efforts have concentrated on the coachbuilt sector. Well, that’s about to change. Just ahead of the 2019 season, it’s introduced a couple of van conversions – two-berth Toleno L, here, and four-berth Toleno R.

Both are based on the 5.99m long version of Fiat’s ever-popular Ducato high-top van. And both are very competitively priced.

Tolenos will be manufactured here in the UK, to National Caravan Council approval, at sister company Auto-Trail’s state-of-the-art premises near Grimsby.

This Toleno L, then, kicks off at under £40,000. That’s real bargain territory, although you should

Keeping it compact in an A-class way

As events unfold through Europe, you could be forgiven for thinking things don’t look so rosy for motorhome imports. Then again, when you can come up with something like this…It’s the latest addition to the Roller Team range of competitively priced A-class motorhomes. It’s only 5.99m from bumper to bumper, yet its proportions are right. And its price is a major attraction, rolling out (sic) at £10 short of £60,000 – and free of the optional packs and extras that so many manufacturers hold back to make you spend often a whole lot more. Meet the Pegaso 590.Advantages of an A-class? Superior insulation, more interior space (thanks to the bodywork extending to

Pegaso 745

Customer guest blogger: Julie Marshall. Motorhomes are a wonderful way to holiday because they allow you to travel in comfort and in style. You can pack up everything you could possibly need before you leave home and then visit far flung corners of the UK and Europe without worrying about where you are going to spend the night.

There are models in all sizes, from the tiny to the huge, with prices to suit all budgets.

But before you take the plunge and invest in a motorhome it’s worth hiring one for a few days, which is exactly what I did.

I arranged to hire a motorhome from Peter Roberts Caravans & Motorhomes, of Honley, Huddersfield – as well as selling motorhomes and caravans they also offer

A to B-rit

Topping off the Roller Team range for 2018 is a very interesting beast. It’s an A-class, the sole such model in the line-up, and it has an eye-catchingly low price.

Just as notable are the changes made for this, the Pegaso’s second season in the UK. It may be built in Italy, but as of now all Pegaso 740 motorhomes are fully “handed” for us – with the habitation door on our nearside and a cab door on the driver’s side. Some of the interior layout switches to suit, too, although the popular island bed arrangement at the back is retained.

A-class’s sit at the pinnacle of motorhomes. Built from the chassis up, the bodywork means interior space is optimised, with all-round insulation and

Practical Motorhome

The Italian brand has taken the winning mix used by its value-for-money line-up and added design flair. Gentleman Jack reviews the Roller Team Zefiro 696

Overview

The Ford Transit base vehicle is a highly desirable bonus at this price

Roller Team’s 2016 Zefiro range has pulled off two neat tricks. First, although the slim windscreen ticket confirms its position as the Italian manufacturer’s value-for-money range, it has had some nips and tucks. (Read about tweaks for Roller Team's 2016 motorhomes here.) These are joined by an improved standard spec, resulting in motorhomes that can compete against far more expensive rivals.

Second, by sticking with Ford’s finest, Roller Team has ensured that

Roller Team Pegaso 740

MMM Magazine

I’m at Auto-Trail, not in Italy, for this test. Grimsby-based Auto-Trail is a very British company, producing a very British range of coachbuilts and panel van conversions. But it’s owned by French leisure giant, Trigano, and also acts as importer for the Roller Team range of motorhomes.

Whether it’s Auto-Trail’s influence, or just good business sense on the part of Trigano, I know not, but unlike the vast majority of continental imports, all Roller Teams are UK-handed.

Except that, last year, when the Pegaso 740 was launched as the marque’s first A-class in the UK, its habitation and cab doors remained on the continental side. Maybe Trigano was testing the water to see how well it sold.

Auto-Roller 746 review | What Motorhome

What Motorhome

Look at the floorplan here and you’ll think this is a British motorhome – it’s even got the entrance door on the UK nearside.

But look at the décor and design and there are definite signs of continental flair.

The dark wood furniture with white centres to the cupboard doors is quite striking. Roller Team makes more changes to its vehicles for the UK than most other imported brands, and it continues to offer overcab coachbuilt models here. Low-profiles dominate but there are two Ford-based Zefiros with a luton, as well as this single Auto-Roller.

The layout is an old UK favourite featuring a front pullman dinette and a rear U-shaped lounge. It’s a six-berth with five seatbelts as a 3.5-tonne
